The Hong Kong Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (HKPDF) was established following the successful Third International Symposium of the Asian and Pacific Parkinson’s Disease Association (APPDA) in December 2001. The symposium was sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, and supported by a number of local and international organizations including the World Health Organization and the Movement Disorder Society. There is a huge demand from patients, their carers and our community to have updated educational materials on such diseases, not only to understand the challenges that they face, but also how to prepare themselves to cope with such a challenge. Knowledge on various aspects of Parkinson’s disease and its related disorders is rapidly increasing and evolving, with enormous amounts of new information from research efforts into their causations and new treatment modalities reported regularly. Even professional health care workers may have difficulty keeping up with the latest information and applying them to their clinical practice.

One of the missions of the HKPDF is to gather such information on a regular basis from various experts in the field, prepare it in such a way that is understandable to the informed layperson and make it readily accessible to our community.

This information that we provide is not intended to replace the specific advice that the attending doctor gives to the patient or their carers, but to complement that information. I hope that patients, their carers and our community would find the information in our website useful in helping them to better understand and cope with Parkinson’s disease and its related disorders. We would also welcome any feedback from you on the information that we provide, so that we can constantly improve our website and update our information.

The HKPDF was incorporated as a limited company and a charitable body on 21st August 2002.

The proposal to form the HKPDF was made during the 3rd International Symposium of the Asian and Pacific Parkinson's Disease Association (APPDA 2001) held in Hong Kong from 1st to 5th December 2001.  APPDA 2001 was sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

The Committee for the formation of the HKPDF, headed by Mrs Christina Lee, and ably supported by Mrs Olivia Davies, Mrs Nina Lam and Ms Lelia Chow, was crucial in securing an initial donation during APPDA 2001.  This Committee serves as the Honorary Advisory Body to the HKPDF.

The Honorable Dr York Chow is the Patron of the Foundation.

The Mission

The missions of the Hong Kong Parkinson's disease Foundation are to educate and update patients, primary carers and the Community on Parkinson's disease, funding self-help organizations formed by patients or other non-government organizations to hold activities for the benefits of the patients and providing financial support to education programs and medical researches in various aspect of Parkinson's disease.

 

Constituents of the Hong Kong Parkinson's disease Foundation

The Directors consist of a group of professional health care workers and administrators, social workers and patients. Their work, and those of our Honorary Advisors, Secretary, Auditor and Legal Advisor are completely voluntary and without pay. They provide a useful and diverse source of connections, opinions and advice with a common objective to ultimately help patients with Parkinson's disease in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Parkinson’s Disease Foundation Education and Training Committee

Term of Reference:

1. To be responsible for the development and management of the existing website of the Foundation as the means to disseminate services for the patients with PD, their carers and the general public.
2. To provide enquiries service through the website of the Foundation for the patients with PD and their carers.
3. To produce education materials for the patients with PD and their carers.
4. To provide training for the formal carers working in the welfare service sector on skills to take care of patients with PD.
